„Sweet Home Alabama“ is a song by the Southern-Rock-Band Lynyrd Skynyrd. It was released 1974 on the album „Second Helping“ and reached #8 of US Billboard Hot 100.
The song was written already before 1974 by Lynyrd-Skynyrd’s guitar player Gary Rossington, Ed King and singer Ronnie Van Zant but only released on their second album „Second Helping“. It is an answer to the songs „Southern Man“ (1970) and „Alabama“ (1972) of Neil Young who denounced racism and slavery of the Southern states of the US. Lynyrd Skynyrd’s intension was having other aspects in their songs as well and defend the one-sided interpretation of Neil Young’s songs. By the way: none of the writers of the song came from Alabama…

Das Lied wurde bereits vor 1974 von den Lynyrd-Skynyrd-Gitarristen Gary Rossington und Ed King sowie dem Sänger Ronnie Van Zant geschrieben, aber erst auf ihrem zweiten Album „Second Helping“ veröffentlicht. Es stellt eine Antwort auf die Lieder „Southern Man“ (1970) und „Alabama“ (1972) von Neil Young dar, der sich in seinen Liedern über Sklaverei und das Rassentrennungsproblem der Südstaaten äußerte. Lynyrd Skynyrd wollte auch andere Aspekte zu den Südstaaten besungen wissen und wehrte sich gegen die einseitige Darstellung Neil Youngs. Keiner der Autoren stammte übrigens aus Alabama.
